Blisskrieg! Uber-babes Of The 3rd Reich
(A CineManiac's Guide To Nazisploitation Cinema)
By: Mickael
True Nazisploitation films contain 3 elements: Nazis (duh), sexploitation, and women-in-prison. Without all three elements appearing somewhere in the film, it’s not a true Nazisploitation flick. It’s just either a drama with Nazis, or a Nazi zombie flick, or an “Alternate timeline where Nazis won!” Sci Fi spectacular. Real Nazi exploitation films follow the formula of Nazi + sex + prison=Nazisploitation. Pitch a bitch fit all you want, I’m sticking to my guns on this one. They say you choose your hill to die on, and I am. Mount NaziSexPrison is my “Battle Of The Bulge”.
If you just consider any picture with Nazis as foils to be “Nazisploitation”, then I think you’re missing the point. Indiana Jones & The Temple Of Doom and Captain America feature Nazi antagonists. Of course Nazis are the bad guys, they’re fucking Nazis. They murdered 8 million Jews. Y’think they’re gonna put a Nazi sympathizer on the Avengers? So, to avoid having to make a list of all 1,534 films that mention Nazis in some form, I’ve concocted a final solution to look at specific factors in the film’s makeup to determine if it is worthy to be considered pure Nazisploitation. Films that, by their creation, are Simply Superior to the inferior, sub-par films that lack true Nazi exploitation heritage. A “master race” of movies, if you will. Oh, god... what have I done?
Before I accidentally write an essay on the inequality of the exploitation film, I want to make it clear that I appreciate the need for horror, Sci Fi, fantasy, and adventure films with Nazi baddies. Maybe someday I’ll compose a full list of those, but until then, here’s a simple sampling of what may be on it: Iron Sky, Dead Snow, Outpost, Bloodrayne: The Third Reich, Inglourious Basterds, Nazis At The Center Of The Earth, Shock Waves, Frankenstein’s Army, Hellboy, Blood Creek, War Of The Dead, Pupper Master III: Toulon’s Revenge, Zombie Massacre 2: Reich Of The Dead, Zombie Lake, Oasis Of the Zombies, Horrors Of War, The Frozen Dead, They Saved Hitler’s Brain, and Black Angel. You're welcome.
Having laid out the qualifications, the rest is simple: let’s get to the movies! Predominantly popular throughout the 1970s, Nazisploitation films were screened in North American grindhouse theaters, banned in the UK, and vehemently denied in Germany (contrary to clear evidence of their existence). Sexual abuse, rape, perversion, inhumane experimentation, torture, and very dapper outfits abound in these distasteful and often violent films. Though Nazi imagery is displayed as dominant, the Nazis themselves are typically shown to be disgusting and blatantly evil. Their manhood is questioned and they’re revealed as corrupt fools, barely better than spoiled children, as they seek to be dominated by the women they hold captive. The lecherous displays of carnal acts are not really sensual or pornographic, but rather humiliating and embarassing, even for the audience. Nazisploitation is... weird, but I love it.
As early as 1939’s Hitler: Beast Of Berlin (over 2 years before we entered the war!), Nazis were being portrayed in film as shameless evil-doers. However, the earliest example, and indeed the grandad to any Nazisploitation film, is 1958’s She Demons. In the film, a shipwrecked couple wash up on an island inhabited by an evil Nazi scientist who is performing disfiguring experiments on the native women he has held captive. It’s pretty tame by exploitation standards, actually measuring more closely to the Sci Fi films of the day than to its later, more sexually subversive, counterparts. Due to its inherent nature as taboo entertainment, Nazi exploitation flicks are often repackaged, re-titled, and resold, making it difficult to distinguish which film is which until you actually watch them. Let this list serve as your map and guide you through this very obscure subgenre. Here are 34 oddities of film culture from a bygone era:
